A Water-based Zinc Battery Is Expected To Be A Replacement For Lithium Ion Batteries

American researchers have developed a rechargeable, water-based zinc battery that is not only large, but also long-lived, and safer, and is expected to be an ideal alternative to the widely used lithium-ion battery.

For batteries, small size, large capacity, long life, high safety and low manufacturing cost are all desirable qualities, but the battery pack is still hard to find.In the case of lithium ion batteries, which are widely used in consumer electronics, the explosion risk has been criticised by many for its capacity, volume and longevity.

Army research laboratory and the university of Maryland, and the national institute of standards and technology team of researchers, the traditional zinc battery technology combined with a water battery technology, developed a greater capacity, safety higher rechargeable battery.They use a new type of aqueous electrolyte to replace the flammable organic electrolyte used in traditional lithium-ion batteries, which greatly improves the safety of the battery.By adding zinc and adding salt to the electrolyte, the energy density of the battery is increased.

The researchers point out that the zinc battery is a safe and relatively inexpensive battery, but with low energy density and short life span, it is not perfect.The new type of water-based zinc battery has overcome these shortcomings of traditional zinc battery, which not only greatly improved the energy density of the battery, but also increased the battery life.Compared with lithium ion batteries, the water-based zinc battery is not only able to compete with one another in terms of energy density, but also is much safer. There is no risk of explosion or fire.
