   On the afternoon of March 29, in the "Super Press Conference" program of Shenzhen Satellite TV, BYD announced the company's latest technology in the battery field: a blade-type lithium iron phosphate battery in the form of an online conference. According to BYD, the battery cell adopts a non-module battery grouping method to increase the overall space utilization rate of the battery pack from 40% in the past to 60%. This largely solves the problem that the group energy density of lithium iron phosphate batteries is not as good as that of ternary lithium batteries, and raises the cruising range of electric vehicles equipped with lithium iron phosphate batteries to the level of ternary lithium battery vehicles.


   More importantly, the blade battery can pass the most stringent "acupuncture test" in the power battery test, and thus has extremely high safety. Wang Chuanfu, chairman of BYD, said at the press conference that the emergence of the blade battery represented the company's confidence in "letting spontaneous combustion erased from the development of power batteries." Obviously, BYD, who used such a futuristic virtual reality studio, wanted to make a big news this time.


   After Wang Chuanfu's speech, He Long, vice president of BYD and chairman of Ford Battery Company, showed everyone the technical characteristics of the blade battery. He introduced that after the battery cells of a traditional battery pack form a module, they are assembled and arranged on a tray to form a battery pack. The modules need to be reinforced by the outer shell, and the safety structures such as beams need to be strengthened between the modules. These components all reduce the space utilization rate of electric vehicles. He Long said that using electric vehicles manufactured in the traditional way, the battery pack space utilization rate is only 40%.


   Wang Chuanfu said that BYD's original intention in developing blade batteries was to increase the space utilization of battery packs, and then to solve the problem of low energy density of lithium iron phosphate batteries. It is reported that the space utilization of the blade battery has been increased to 60%, which is 50% higher than before.


   More importantly, the blade battery has made great progress in terms of safety. The first is the breakthrough of the acupuncture test. In a video a few days ago, BYD changed the comparison of acupuncture tests for ternary lithium batteries, ordinary lithium iron phosphate batteries and blade batteries. Among them, the ternary lithium battery fired and exploded soon after being penetrated by a steel needle with a diameter of about 5 mm, and the ordinary lithium iron phosphate battery opened the pressure relief valve in the experiment and cooked the eggs on its surface. The blade battery has not changed significantly. Obviously, it has done a good job of controlling the thermal runaway problems that affect electric vehicles.


   For this test result, academician Ouyang Minggao, an expert in electric vehicle technology in China, said that the length of the blade battery in a long strip is longer, so the heat dissipation is better. At the same time, its longer loop also makes the internal short circuit of the battery heat up more slowly. In combination with other safety measures taken by BYD, the blade battery achieved a satisfactory performance in the puncture test.


   In addition, He Long also said that the blade battery has achieved good results in structural safety. At present, BYD has installed 100 blade batteries in the battery pack. These batteries are closely arranged horizontally. Each battery is equivalent to the role of the beam in the past battery pack, which indirectly improves the overall strength of the battery pack. Combined with the technical principle of aluminum honeycomb panels, BYD has also covered high-strength panels on the upper and lower sides to improve the strength of the battery pack.

   According to BYD's plan, the blade battery will be installed on BYD HAN, the company's first C-class sedan listed in the third quarter of 2020. At that time, the cruising range of the product will exceed 600 kilometers.
