The Prieto battery system is designed around a porous copper structure (foamed copper), conformally coated with an ultra-thin polymer electrolyte, and then surrounded by a positive electrode matrix. The resulting three-dimensional lithium-ion battery with interpenetrating electrodes has a very short Li + diffusion distance and a much higher power density than the current two-dimensional structure. Copper telluride (Cu2Sb) electrodeposited on copper foam provides stability to the positive electrode and exhibits a large capacity during a series of cycles. This foam cell can be customized to optimize for power density or energy density.
Prieto is committed to producing safer lithium ionic compounds to meet market demand. Currently, the company has two products under development to provide a solution to eliminate fire hazards to replace current lithium-ion compounds. The first is a newly tested 3D positive electrode that is assembled into a full battery using a conventional liquid electrolyte; the second 3D solid state battery uses a Prieto proprietary solid polymer electrolyte.
