Mobility Scooter & Power Chair Batteries
Several different types of batteries are used by mobility vehicles. Each performs differently, especially in terms of how long it lasts per charge and the amount of time it takes to fully charge.
Within each battery type, the size of your battery will be directly proportional to the range and weight limit of your scooter. Another factor to look out for is amps. The higher the amps mentioned, the more the vehicle’s power.
Three extremely popular technologies are lead acid, lithium-ion and gel-cell batteries.
Gel-cell batteries come sealed so they require almost no maintenance. Although they cost more than other kinds, gel-cell batteries are extremely safe and will never leak. They are FAA certified batteries so you can take them on airplanes. They also do not need to be fully discharged before recharging which is very handy.
Lead Acid (Wet Cell)
Lead acid or wet-cell batteries are cheaper than other kinds but they’ll need you to maintain them. Every so often their water levels must be checked and topped up if necessary. They last a little longer that gel-cell batteries - up to an extra six month battery life - but they do carry the risk of acid spills.
Lithium-ion batteries are the next big thing in scooter and wheelchair batteries. Amazingly, they offer a largely extended range whilst maintaining, and often lowing by four times, the battery weight and by extension the entire vehicle weight. These often cost a little more, but most customers think it totally worth it.
You’ll find more modern models, especially those designed for easy transport, using these newer technology lithium-ion batteries. Some airlines permit lithium-ion batteries, making your journey super easy – always check before you travel.
