In a statement, the ministry said it had asked the us for bilateral consultations to start the dispute settlement process.
The move was one of a series of responses by the south Korean government after President Donald trump announced high tariffs on imported washing machines and solar panels in February.
The south Korean government said last month it had notified the world trade organisation that it planned to suspend the value of its imports from the us.Tariffs on $800m of goods were reduced as a response to the us plan to impose tariffs on some goods imported from South Korea.
South Korea's ministry of industry and commerce said it would respond to the unfair import restrictions imposed by its major trading partners on south Korean companies.
