And it evens out voltage spikes and prevents damage to other parts of the electrical system. In a standard vehicle, the Starting, Lighting, Ignition (SLI) battery is kept at a high state of charge (SOC), so it doesn’t require deep-cycling capabilities. Standard Flooded Battery Construction
12-volt lead-acid batteries are made up of six cells. Within each cell, positive and negative plates are stacked in an alternating fashion, separated by a thin sheet of microporous plastic called a separator. The stacked plates are immersed in an electrolyte solution, or battery acid, which surrounds the separators and the plates, providing a path for electricity to flow.
