The Scientists Tested The Efficiency Of A Dye Sensitized Solar Cell With A Halogen Element.

Researchers at the university of British Columbia and the university of north Carolina at chapel hill are studying the use of halogen elements to improve the performance of dye-sensitized solar cells.

Researchers said, the use of halogens elements could dye sensitization battery conversion efficiency increased by 25%, because these elements exist in such cells can accelerate the electron transfer between the electrolyte and the semiconductor.

They used four different dyes, including fluorine, bromine, chlorine and iodine, and observed the whole process by X-ray absorption spectrometry.The study also showed that larger halogens have a better performance in accelerating electron transfer, while iodine dyes can regenerate almost three times faster through electrolytes.

Halogens are not the focus of solar cell research.They can only form a weak transient bond that lasts less than 10 microseconds, and only a small fraction of all the atoms in the solar cell.The researchers were delighted that the keys could make a significant difference in solar energy conversion.
