Walney Extension, the world's largest offshore wind farm off the coast of cumbria, has officially opened.Covering an area of 145 sq km, equivalent to 20,000 football fields, the wind farm has an installed capacity of 695 megawatts and is capable of providing electricity for nearly 600,000 homes.

The Walney Extension wind farm has 87 turbines, each about 190 meters high, about the height of two Big Ben.Compared with the famous British offshore wind farm "London array", it has fewer turbines but stronger power generation capacity, and its installed capacity exceeds the 630 mw of "London array" to become the world's largest offshore wind farm, marking the rapid progress of British wind power technology in the past five years.

Figures show that offshore wind can supply about a tenth of Britain's electricity each year. The UK's energy secretary, Claire Perry, said the project had strengthened the UK's position as the "" largest offshore wind installation country" "and created thousands of high-quality jobs.
